Roulette: one zero or two, and what it costs

Roulette is usually the first table anyone meets. The wheel spins, the ball drops, and payouts follow how narrowly the outcome was predicted: a single number pays the most, red or black and odd or even the least.

The distinction that actually matters is arithmetic rather than aesthetic. European roulette has 37 pockets — the numbers 1 to 36 plus a single zero — so a straight-up number has a true chance of 1 in 37 while paying 35 to 1, leaving the house with roughly 2.7 per cent. Blackjack: the rules on the table matter more than the strategy chart

Blackjack is played against the dealer, aiming for a hand closer to 21 without exceeding it. Number cards count at face value, picture cards are ten, and an ace is one or eleven; a ten with an ace is a blackjack and the strongest hand. Each round a player may hit, stand, double or split a pair, while the dealer follows a fixed rule and typically draws to 17.

What separates a good table from a poor one is the small print. Check whether a blackjack pays 3:2 or 6:5, how many decks are in the shoe, whether the dealer hits or stands on a soft 17, and whether doubling after a split is allowed. These conditions are printed in the table's rules panel and their combined effect on long-run return is larger than the effect of most individual playing decisions. Side bets, whatever their names, are consistently worse value than the main wager.

Baccarat and casino poker formats

Baccarat is the simplest table to sit at: a stake goes on Player, Banker or Tie, cards are dealt to a fixed drawing pattern, and the hand closest to nine wins. No decisions follow the deal. It is widely published mathematics that Banker is the strongest of the three even after commission, Player is marginally behind it, and Tie is clearly the most expensive bet on the layout despite its attractive payout.
